The league's own quarterback formula, built from four rate stats and capped at 158.3.
passer rating combines completion percentage, yards per attempt, touchdown rate and interception rate, each clamped, then scaledFour components, each bounded so no single one can run away with the number, averaged and scaled to a range that tops out at 158.3 for reasons that made sense in 1973 and have not since.
It is returned because it is the number the broadcast shows and people search for it. As an evaluation it is dated: it has no sack term, no accounting for down and distance, and no idea whether a completion gained a first down. A checkdown on third and twelve improves it.
EPA per dropback answers the question passer rating was reaching for, with sacks included and situation accounted for. Use passer rating to reconcile with a broadcast, not to settle an argument.
Comparing ratings across eras. Completion percentage has climbed twelve points or so since the formula was written, so the same rating means something different in 1995 and 2025.
