Time to throw

also: TT · time to release

Seconds from the snap until the ball leaves the quarterback's hand, measured by tracking rather than charted by hand.

League average has drifted up every season since 2020 and now sits above 2.8 seconds. The spread between the quickest and slowest starters is under a second, which is the whole range the argument lives in.

It is a joint property of the quarterback, the scheme and the protection, and it is usually read the wrong way round. A fast time to throw is often a coordinator calling quick game to hide a line, not a quarterback processing quickly; a slow one is often a quarterback holding the ball for shots downfield, which shows up as higher air yards on the same rows.

Read it beside air yards and sack rate. Fast and short is a scheme choice. Slow with deep throws is a plan. Slow with short throws is the problem you were looking for.

The common mistake

Treating it as a processing-speed rating. It measures when the ball left, not when the read was made, and those separate for any quarterback who has to wait on a route to break.
